After ASEAN 2026 glory, Vietnamese football cannot sleep on praise

On the night of January 5, 2026, at Rajamangala Stadium, the final whistle of the ASEAN Championship final triggered a massive celebration for Vietnamese fans. Nguyen Xuan Son had collapsed with a serious injury, yet the rest of the team still finished the job and lifted the trophy. That image became the real starting point: after a regional title, what will Vietnamese football build next? A trophy is real, but it does not automatically prove that the whole system is healthy. Thailand remain more experienced, Indonesia are investing heavily in naturalized players and are planning beyond one tournament. Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia are not waiting. So I want to talk about three fractures, all measurable with data. The first fracture is the academy system. Many clubs say they believe in youth development, but match-day squad lists still show that most starting places go to foreign players and experienced local players. Very few under-21 players receive meaningful minutes in the V.League. An academy is not a factory. It only matters when the first team gives young players real opportunities in competitive matches. Domestic football does not always prepare players for the tempo of East Asian or West Asian opponents. Vietnamese clubs need more regular exposure to AFC competitions. The third fracture is the depth of the national team. Nguyen Xuan Son proved the value of a clinical striker, but if he is absent, who can play a full 90 minutes at high intensity? The answer is not just about forwards. It is about centre-backs, full-backs, central midfielders and a ball-playing goalkeeper. To go deep at the Asian Cup 2027, Vietnam needs at least 11 players competing at a strong continental club level. Some people will say I am too demanding. The team just won Southeast Asia, yet I keep talking about cracks. But I have lived through many cycles. I remember titles followed by silence, and four years later people ask why there is no next generation. I do not want that story again. Data can help us stay honest. Watch player depth indices, track the minutes of under-23 players in the V.League, and check how many young players from Vietnamese clubs appear in Asian competitions. If those numbers do not improve before 2027, our optimism will only be a firework. My bet is not about one match. My bet is that before the decisive stage of Asian Cup 2027 qualifying, Vietnamese football will be forced to make an institutional shock: either increase young players' minutes or pay the price with a thin national squad.
